Chicago, Illinois – Areas of dense fog south of Interstate 80 are reducing visibility to one-quarter mile or less early Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions across northern Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, fog has developed near and south of I-88, with the greatest coverage focused along and south of I-80. Some locations are experiencing locally dense fog, significantly limiting visibility during the morning commute.

The fog is expected to persist mainly through 9 a.m. CST, though forecasters note it may linger as late as 10 a.m. in isolated areas. Visibility may change suddenly, particularly for drivers traveling south of Chicago and across portions of central and northern Illinois.

The primary impacts include localized very low visibility and slowed driving conditions. Motorists are advised to use low-beam headlights, increase following distance, and remain alert for rapid changes in roadway visibility.

Interstates potentially affected include I-80, I-88, and connecting state routes across the region. While conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning, patchy fog may remain in some areas beyond the initial advisory window.

The fog could affect early commuters, commercial drivers, and students traveling to morning classes across impacted counties.
