Hastings, Nebraska – Critical to potentially extreme fire weather conditions are expected across central and south-central Nebraska Tuesday, with a Fire Weather Watch in effect from noon to 8 p.m. CST.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, sustained southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 30 and 45 mph will combine with very low relative humidity values, dropping as low as 10% to 15% across much of the region. Winds are forecast to shift more westerly through the afternoon.

The most dangerous conditions are expected along and south of Interstate 80, including communities such as Kearney, Holdrege, Lexington, McCook and Hill City. Portions of southwest Nebraska and north-central Kansas are under a Red Flag Warning, indicating more immediate critical fire conditions.

Forecasters note that, unlike many fire weather days, the threat Tuesday may extend several hours beyond sunset as winds remain gusty and humidity recovers slowly during the evening.

Any fire that develops could spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks. Securing equipment and properly disposing of cigarettes are also advised.

The dangerous fire conditions could impact agricultural operations, outdoor workers and drivers along Interstate 80 during peak afternoon hours.
