Minnesota – Headlights glow dim through freezing fog along the shores of Lake Superior this morning. Visibility drops near a quarter mile at times in Duluth, with temperatures hovering near 30 degrees. Roads near the lake and along I-35 are slick in spots.
A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Drivers should slow down and use low-beam headlights. Where temperatures sit at or below freezing, moisture may create icy patches on bridges and sidewalks.
Skies clear later today with sunshine and a high near 43 degrees. Enjoy the break. Changes arrive quickly.
Clouds increase tonight with lows near 25. Tuesday turns windy and colder, with highs near 34 degrees. Snow develops late afternoon, possibly mixing with rain at first. Winds increase, gusting up to 45 mph by evening.
Tuesday night brings a full transition to snow. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. Heavy mixed precipitation is possible. Total snowfall could reach 5 to 13 inches, except 7 to 13 inches along the higher terrain of the North Shore. Ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch are also possible.
Wednesday looks intense. Snow remains likely, with blowing snow and gusts near 45 mph. Blizzard conditions are possible along the North Shore. Travel could become very difficult during the Wednesday commute.
Snow showers linger into Thursday with highs near 32. Another round of light snow is possible Friday.
This is peak February winter. Flash freezing could occur where melting happens briefly before temperatures fall again.
Looking into President’s Day week, colder air dominates midweek before moderation begins later in the 6–10 day outlook.
