Springfield, Missouri – Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected Tuesday, potentially making travel difficult across southwest Missouri.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 25 and 40 mph are forecast Tuesday. The strongest gusts are expected west of Springfield, including areas toward Joplin and along the Interstate 49 corridor.

Forecasters say crosswinds may make east-west travel more challenging, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, buses, and RVs. Loose objects may be blown around, and small tree limbs could break under stronger gusts.

Drivers along Interstate 44, Interstate 49, US Highway 65, and US Highway 60 should prepare for sudden crosswinds, particularly on open stretches of roadway and elevated bridges.

Temperatures will remain above normal through Thursday. Highs are forecast between 64 and 69 degrees Monday, rising into the upper 60s to lower 70s Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday could bring highs between 70 and 74 degrees, with Thursday ranging from 67 to 75 degrees.

While dry conditions are expected through midweek, cooler air and a chance of rain may return by the weekend. No severe weather is currently anticipated with the late-week system.

The gusty winds may affect afternoon commuters and school transportation, particularly in rural areas exposed to open terrain.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and use caution while driving during peak wind periods Tuesday.
