Kansas City, Missouri – Above-normal temperatures and gusty winds are increasing fire danger across the Kansas City metro through Wednesday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Kansas City, highs will climb into the mid-60s to lower 70s Monday through Wednesday, with several locations nearing record levels Tuesday. Forecast highs include 71 degrees in Kansas City and Overland Park, 72 degrees in St. Joseph, and upper 60s to near 70 in surrounding communities.

Very breezy conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, especially during the afternoon hours. The combination of warm temperatures, dry fuels, and gusty winds is expected to create elevated fire weather concerns. Officials discourage outdoor burning as fires could spread quickly under these conditions.

Drivers along Interstate 70, Interstate 35, Interstate 435, US-50, and US-36 may encounter strong crosswinds, particularly on open stretches of highway. Blowing dust or smoke from any grassfires could briefly reduce visibility.

Rain chances increase slightly Tuesday night into Thursday, with precipitation probabilities ranging from 20 to 40 percent. While rainfall amounts are uncertain, any moisture could help reduce fire risk later in the week.

The unseasonably warm conditions may increase outdoor activity, particularly during afternoon hours when winds are strongest.

Residents are encouraged to avoid activities that could spark fires and to monitor forecast updates as fire weather concerns continue through midweek.
