Flagstaff, Arizona – Drivers across northern Arizona have hours to prepare before snow and 50 mph wind gusts begin covering highways by 8 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Kaibab Plateau, Mogollon Rim and White Mountains. Snow totals could reach up to 8 inches in higher terrain, with localized amounts of 4 to 6 inches around Forest Lakes and Jacob Lake, and 3 to 6 inches in Flagstaff.
Interstate 40 near Flagstaff and Williams, along with Highways 89A and 260, may become snow-packed overnight. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, creating slick conditions for the Tuesday morning commute. Wind gusts up to 50 mph could reduce visibility and bring down tree branches, especially along exposed stretches near the Mogollon Rim.
Communities including Munds Park, Doney Park and Williams can expect 2 to 4 inches, while lighter accumulations are forecast for Show Low, Heber-Overgaard and Pinetop-Lakeside.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check az511.gov or call 511 for real-time road conditions. Snow-covered roads are likely through Tuesday afternoon, and updates will follow if conditions worsen.
