San Francisco, CA – Drivers and hikers in the Central Coast mountains should prepare for slick roads and falling tree limbs by late Monday afternoon as snow and 60 mph wind gusts move into higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until 4 p.m. Wednesday for elevations above 3,000 feet in the Santa Lucia Mountains and the mountains of San Benito and interior Monterey counties. Snow totals will reach 5 to 10 inches above 3,000 feet, with locally up to 18 inches on the highest peaks. Winds between 50 and 60 mph above 2,000 feet will create blowing snow and reduced visibility during heavier showers.

Mountain routes through Los Padres National Forest and near Pinnacles National Park may become snow-covered, especially Tuesday into Wednesday. Trails, campgrounds and backcountry roads could turn hazardous as snow levels drop and winds increase the risk of downed trees and isolated power outages.

Officials urge motorists to slow down and outdoor enthusiasts to carry winter gear, extra food and water. Check California road conditions by calling 511 before traveling into higher terrain.

Snow and gusty winds will persist through Wednesday afternoon, with additional advisories possible if snowfall intensifies.
