Denver, CO – Mountain travel over Rabbit Ears Pass could deteriorate rapidly by 2 a.m. Tuesday as up to 20 inches of snow and 60 mph wind gusts begin hammering elevations above 9,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Thursday for West Jackson and West Grand counties, including the Mt. Zirkel area. Forecasters expect 10 to 20 inches of accumulation, with blowing snow reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less. Sudden snow squalls may trigger intense bursts of snowfall that quickly cover pavement and create near-zero visibility.

Rabbit Ears Pass will likely see snow-packed and icy stretches during both the Tuesday morning and Wednesday commutes. Strong crosswinds could drift snow across exposed roadways, making traction difficult even for high-clearance vehicles. CDOT may enforce traction laws or temporary closures if conditions worsen.

Drivers should carry food, water, blankets and a flashlight in case of delays. Check Colorado road conditions by calling 511 or visiting cotrip.org before heading into the high country.

Heavy snow and wind will continue through early Thursday, and additional travel advisories remain possible if squalls intensify.
