Elko, NV – Drivers and backcountry travelers in northeastern Nevada should wrap up mountain plans before 4 p.m. Monday as heavy snow and 55 mph wind gusts move into the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 4 p.m. Monday and continues until 10 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters expect 1 to 2 feet of total snowfall across higher elevations, with powerful winds creating blowing snow and visibility below a quarter mile at times.
The storm will intensify Monday evening and continue in waves through midweek. Mountain passes, remote forest roads and access routes near Lamoille Canyon could become snow-packed and hazardous within hours of onset. Strong winds will drift snow across roadways, reducing visibility quickly and making travel dangerous after sunset.
Outdoor recreation could turn risky as whiteout conditions develop along exposed ridges. Anyone heading into the backcountry should carry layered clothing, navigation tools and emergency supplies. Motorists should pack food, water, blankets and a flashlight in case roads close.
Travelers can check the latest Nevada road conditions by calling 511 before departure. Snow and wind will persist through Wednesday evening, and additional advisories remain possible if snowfall rates increase.
