Reno, Nevada – Drivers in the Truckee Meadows could face snow-covered roads and 50 to 60 mph wind gusts by the Tuesday morning commute as a potent winter storm targets western Nevada.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night for the Greater Reno, Carson City and Minden areas. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow on valley floors, with 8 to 16 inches possible in foothill communities above 5,000 feet.

Winds may gust up to 50 mph across the region, with gusts exceeding 60 mph in wind-prone areas along US-395 and Interstate 580. Blowing snow could sharply reduce visibility, especially during heavier bursts Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Officials warn that gusty winds may topple weakened trees in the Davis Fire burn scar area, increasing the risk of downed branches and localized power outages.

Motorists should prepare for difficult travel, allow extra time and monitor Nevada 511 for road conditions. Additional advisories or warnings are likely as confidence increases ahead of Tuesday’s storm.
