Fallon, Nevada – Roads across western Nevada could turn snow-covered by the Monday evening commute as gusty winds and accumulating snow spread across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 4 p.m. Monday for much of western Nevada and Surprise Valley, California, lasting through 4 a.m. Wednesday. Northern Washoe County, including Gerlach and Empire, could see 3 to 7 inches of snow with gusts up to 45 mph. Mineral and southern Lyon counties, including Hawthorne, Yerington and Mina, are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches along US-95 and US-95A, with 3 to 6 inches possible along SR-208, SR-359 and US-6.
In the Western Nevada Basin and Range, including Fallon, Fernley and Pyramid Lake, snow develops by 1 p.m. Tuesday with 1 to 2 inches expected, and 3 to 6 inches east of Middlegate along US-50. Winds may gust up to 50 mph, producing 2 to 5 foot waves on Pyramid Lake and areas of blowing snow.
Drivers should check Nevada 511 before traveling and prepare for slick highways, especially during peak commute hours. Advisories remain in effect through early Wednesday as the storm moves through.
