Monterey, California – Travel and outdoor plans in the Santa Lucia Mountains could quickly turn hazardous by late Monday afternoon as snow and 60 mph wind gusts move into higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Wednesday for elevations above 3,000 feet in the Santa Lucia Mountains and the mountains of San Benito County, including areas near Pinnacles National Park. Snow totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected above 3,000 feet, with the highest peaks possibly receiving up to 18 inches. Areas below 3,000 feet may see little to no accumulation.
Strong winds gusting between 50 and 60 mph above 2,000 feet will combine with snowfall to reduce visibility and increase the risk of downed trees and isolated power outages. Mountain roads and trails could become slick and snow-covered, especially across higher terrain in Los Padres National Forest.
Outdoor enthusiasts should delay high-elevation trips and prepare for winter conditions. Drivers should use caution on mountain routes and monitor local updates as the advisory remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon.
