Amarillo, Texas – Strong winds and dry air will combine to elevate wildfire danger across the Panhandle by Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to 40 mph creating hazardous crosswinds along I-40 and US-287 before sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, breezy to windy conditions will intensify Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures surge into the upper 70s and lower 80s. Afternoon highs are expected to reach near 82 degrees Tuesday after climbing into the mid-80s Monday. Relative humidity values are forecast to drop near or below 20 percent, significantly increasing fire spread potential.

Communities including Canyon, Hereford, Pampa and Borger face heightened fire risk, especially in open grassland areas west of I-27 and along TX-136. Any spark from dragging trailer chains, roadside equipment or outdoor burning could ignite fast-moving grass fires under these conditions. Blowing dust may also briefly reduce visibility in exposed areas.

Wednesday remains windy with highs in the 60s to mid-70s, keeping fire concerns elevated before cooler air arrives Thursday. Winds may continue gusting above 30 mph at times, maintaining dangerous conditions for outdoor activities.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items and use caution while driving high-profile vehicles. The most critical fire weather window appears Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday evening. Additional fire weather statements or advisories may be issued as wind speeds and humidity levels fluctuate across the Panhandle.
