Newport, North Carolina – Rain will overspread eastern North Carolina this afternoon, with up to 2 inches falling by early Monday and water likely pooling on US-70 and NC-24 before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected from this afternoon through Monday morning, with locally higher amounts possible along the coast where isolated thunderstorms develop. The heaviest rain will expand inland late Sunday, then push off the Outer Banks by early Monday.

Communities including Morehead City, Beaufort, New Bern, Jacksonville and Kinston can expect steady rain by late afternoon. Coastal areas such as Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle and Cape Lookout face the greatest chance for heavier bursts and gusty winds overnight. Strong winds will develop over the coastal waters tonight into Monday, which could create hazardous marine conditions and minor overwash in vulnerable spots.

Drivers along NC-58, NC-101 and bridges crossing the Newport and White Oak rivers should anticipate reduced visibility and slick pavement. Poor drainage areas in downtown Morehead City and low-lying neighborhoods near Bogue Sound may see brief street flooding during heavier downpours. Motorists are urged to slow down and avoid water-covered roads after dark.

Rain tapers from west to east before sunrise Monday, followed by seasonable temperatures and breezy conditions. Additional advisories could be issued if thunderstorms intensify or rainfall totals exceed 2 inches in localized coastal bands.
