Davenport, Iowa – Drivers and residents across the Quad Cities should avoid outdoor burning immediately as record-challenging highs near 66 degrees and gusty winds build an elevated fire risk along the I-74 and I-80 corridors Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, unseasonably mild temperatures will persist into midweek, with daily highs in the 50s and 60s. Monday is expected to be the warmest day, with some locations potentially tying or breaking record highs. Breezy conditions from Monday through Wednesday, combined with dry ground and dormant vegetation, will create favorable conditions for rapid fire spread.

Communities on both sides of the Mississippi River, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island and Moline, will see southwest winds increase through the day. Open fields along I-280 and rural stretches of US-61 are particularly vulnerable, where dry grasses can ignite quickly.

Officials urge residents to delay any outdoor burning and properly discard cigarettes. Even small sparks can spread quickly under gusty winds.

A weak system brings a 20% to 50% chance of light rain Tuesday night into early Wednesday, but rainfall amounts appear limited and may not significantly reduce fire concerns.

Temperatures cool slightly by midweek, though breezy conditions continue. Additional statements may be issued if fire danger increases or if records are officially broken Monday afternoon.
