Wilmington, N.C. – Drivers across coastal North Carolina should prepare for ponding water and reduced visibility along US-17 and I-40 as steady rain spreads inland this morning and intensifies through late Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, light rain will overspread the region early Sunday, becoming moderate and occasionally heavy during the afternoon and evening. Total rainfall amounts between 0.50 and 0.75 inches are expected by late tonight, with isolated thunderstorms possible after sunset.
The heaviest rainfall is likely between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., which could create slick stretches along I-140, US-74 and Carolina Beach Road. Brief downpours may overwhelm storm drains in low-lying neighborhoods, especially near downtown Wilmington and along the Cape Fear River.
Temperatures will climb into the lower 60s Sunday before dropping into the 40s overnight. While widespread flooding is not expected, short bursts of heavier rain could reduce visibility below one mile and lead to standing water during the evening commute and overnight travel hours.
Motorists should slow down on wet roads, increase following distance and avoid driving through water-covered streets. Secure outdoor items ahead of any isolated thunderstorm that may develop this evening.
Rain tapers off toward daybreak Monday, with improving conditions expected by mid-morning. Additional updates will be issued if thunderstorms become more widespread overnight.
