Maine’s far north is locked in a deep February chill this morning as light snow drifts across Caribou. Temperatures sit near 9 degrees, and wind chills hover close to 0. Fine flakes streak past streetlights, and untreated roads look powdery along US-1.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a slight chance of snow continues early with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 28 degrees. Northwest winds around 7 mph keep the air biting. Snow amounts remain light, but even a thin coating can turn slick at these temperatures.

Drivers should watch for icy patches on bridges and rural routes. This is prime flash-freeze season. Any minor melting during daylight hours refreezes quickly once temperatures slide back toward the single digits tonight. Lows drop near 4 degrees under increasing clouds.

Monday brings partial sunshine with a high near 29 degrees. Monday night holds a slight chance of snow as lows dip into the mid-teens. By Tuesday, temperatures climb into the mid-30s with a 40% chance of snow. Another chance of snow lingers Tuesday night before drier air arrives Wednesday with highs near 32.

While much of the country trends 10 to 20 degrees above normal into President’s Day week, northern Maine stays seasonably cold. Even so, subtle moderation is possible by late week.

Bundle up, limit time outdoors, and allow extra travel time today. Are you seeing drifting snow on your road this morning?
