North Carolina’s Crystal Coast is waking up to damp air and steady rain sweeping across Morehead City late this morning. Pavement along Arendell Street and US-70 glistens, and puddles are already forming near low-lying intersections.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, rain remains likely through late afternoon with a high near 62 degrees. Rainfall totals between one-half and one inch are possible before skies begin to gradually clear. A rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out before early afternoon. Winds shift from calm to southerly at 5 to 10 mph, occasionally gusting higher near the coast.

Drivers should slow down on bridges over Bogue Sound and along Highway 24. Brief downpours may reduce visibility quickly. Ponding on roads could develop where drainage is poor. Keep headlights on and allow extra stopping distance.

Rain tapers later today, and clearing begins by Monday morning. Highs reach the mid-50s Monday with drier air moving in. Monday night cools into the mid-30s under partly cloudy skies.

By Tuesday, sunshine returns with highs near 59 degrees. Midweek turns even milder, with temperatures climbing into the mid-60s Wednesday and upper 60s Thursday. That warming trend fits a broader February pattern, as above-normal temperatures expand across much of the eastern U.S. into President’s Day week.

Late-week rain chances return Friday, but for now, spring vibes are building along the coast.
