Colby, Kansas – Drivers across northwest Kansas are facing quarter-mile visibility early Sunday, with dense fog cutting sightlines to around 1,320 feet before a much stronger wind threat builds by Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday for Thomas, Logan and Wichita counties, including Colby, Oakley and Leoti. Visibility may drop rapidly over short distances, creating slick sidewalks, reduced braking distance and hazardous conditions along Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 83.
Attention then shifts to a High Wind Watch from Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon across northwest Kansas and eastern Colorado. Southwest to west winds are expected to reach 25 to 45 mph, with gusts between 60 and 65 mph possible. Strongest winds are projected from late Tuesday morning through midafternoon, increasing the risk of blowing dust and sudden visibility drops along I-70 near Goodland, Oakley and Sharon Springs.
High-profile vehicles, including semis and campers, could struggle with crosswinds. Residents should secure outdoor items, prepare for isolated power outages and limit travel during peak gusts. Those with respiratory conditions should remain indoors if dust concentrations increase.
More advisories or upgrades are possible as Tuesday approaches.
