Bakersfield, California – Drivers on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine could encounter slick pavement as early as Monday afternoon, with snow levels forecast to fall below Tejon Pass by Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Monday afternoon through Thursday morning for the Grapevine, including Tejon Pass and the communities of Lebec and Grapevine.
Forecasters say light wet snow is possible with total accumulations between 1 and 2 inches. While amounts appear modest, snow levels dropping below the pass Tuesday could allow snow to stick on bridges and overpasses. Winds may gust up to 40 mph, increasing the risk of sudden visibility reductions and difficult driving conditions for high-profile vehicles.
The most significant impacts are expected during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes, when temperatures will be cold enough for snow to accumulate on elevated surfaces.
Caltrans may implement chain controls or traffic restrictions if snowfall intensifies. Motorists are urged to monitor updates, allow extra travel time and check road conditions by calling 511 before heading over the pass. The watch remains in effect through Thursday morning as additional waves of precipitation move across Kern County.
