Joshua Tree National Park, California – Strong desert winds will sweep across eastern Riverside County Monday afternoon into early Tuesday, creating hazardous travel and areas of blowing dust.
A Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. PST Tuesday for both the western and eastern portions of Joshua Tree National Park, the Chuckwalla Mountains, Chiriaco Summit and the Chuckwalla Valley. Locations impacted include Cottonwood Visitor Center, Lost Horse-Keys Village, Midland and Imperial Hot Mineral Springs.
Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts up to 40 mph. According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the strongest winds will develop Monday afternoon and persist through the evening hours before gradually easing after midnight.
Drivers along Interstate 10 near Chiriaco Summit and Desert Center should prepare for strong crosswinds, especially high-profile vehicles such as RVs, campers and tractor trailers. Sudden gusts could make steering difficult in exposed stretches.
Blowing dust and sand may reduce visibility to below one mile at times, particularly in open desert areas. Motorists should slow down, use headlights in dusty conditions and avoid stopping in travel lanes if visibility drops suddenly.
Loose outdoor items, including patio furniture and lightweight equipment, should be secured before winds increase. Campers and visitors to Joshua Tree National Park should anchor tents and secure gear.
