Gerlach, Nevada – Snow and gusty winds will create hazardous travel across northern Washoe County beginning Monday morning and lasting through Tuesday night.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday until 10 p.m. Tuesday for areas including Gerlach and Empire.
Snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected, with the heaviest snowfall likely Monday afternoon into early Tuesday. Winds may gust as high as 40 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility on open desert roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, travel could become very difficult at times, especially during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Slick pavement and drifting snow are possible along State Route 447 and other rural highways in northern Washoe County.
Bridges and overpasses may ice up quickly as temperatures fall, creating patchy black ice even after snowfall tapers. Gusty winds could also cause sudden visibility drops in exposed areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and increase following distance. Carry winter supplies and check Nevada 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out.
Conditions should gradually improve late Tuesday night as snow diminishes and winds ease.
