Grants Pass, Oregon – Heavy snow could blanket higher terrain in eastern Curry and Josephine counties late Monday into Tuesday, raising the threat of dangerous travel for mountain routes and rural communities.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday evening for elevations above 2,000 feet. Areas included are the Kalmiopsis Region, Bear Camp Road and higher terrain east of the coast range.

Snow totals of 8 to 12 inches are possible if the storm strengthens as expected. The heaviest snowfall is most likely Monday night into early Tuesday morning, when colder air settles over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, travel may become very difficult to impossible across higher elevations. The Tuesday morning and evening commutes could be impacted, especially on winding mountain roads where snow accumulates quickly.

Bear Camp Road and remote backcountry areas may see rapid deterioration in conditions. Drivers should be prepared for chain requirements or temporary closures if warnings are issued.

Residents in elevations above 2,000 feet should monitor updates closely as watches can be upgraded to warnings with little notice. Prepare vehicles with winter emergency kits, charge electronic devices and consider adjusting travel plans ahead of the storm’s arrival.

Lower elevations, including Grants Pass, may see cold rain, but a shift in storm track or temperature could bring accumulating snow closer to valley floors.
