Mammoth Lakes, California – A powerful Sierra storm will bury Mono County in feet of snow and unleash destructive winds starting late Sunday night, with whiteout conditions likely through Wednesday evening.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 10 p.m. Wednesday. Snow will intensify quickly Monday evening, with the most intense snowfall expected Monday night through Tuesday evening.
Communities along and west of US 395, including Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining and Bridgeport, can expect 1 to 3 feet of accumulation. The highest elevations along the Sierra crest could see 3 to 4 feet. The Chalfant Valley is forecast to receive lighter totals of 2 to 4 inches.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, winds will gust 35 to 45 mph in lower elevations, with up to 65 mph along wind-prone stretches of US 395. Sierra ridge gusts may exceed 100 mph, creating dangerous crosswinds and near-zero visibility in blowing snow.
Travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially along US 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport and on mountain roads near Mammoth Lakes. Whiteout conditions are possible during peak snowfall. Strong winds combined with heavy snow may bring down trees and power lines, leading to outages.
Residents should delay non-essential travel and prepare for extended disruptions. Secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices and keep emergency supplies on hand. Drivers should check Caltrans road updates by calling 511 before heading into mountain corridors.
