Richmond, VA – A soaking rain is expected across Virginia and the southern Delmarva region Sunday, bringing much-needed precipitation but also prompting concerns about rising rivers and shifting ice.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, steady rainfall will spread across the James and Potomac River basins Sunday into early Monday. Forecast maps show widespread totals ranging from around a quarter-inch north of Interstate 70 to nearly 1 inch across southern Virginia.

Forecasters say milder temperatures in the 40s and 50s this week will accelerate snowmelt in parts of the region. Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey could see some snow mix in, but most of Virginia is expected to receive rain. The warmer conditions combined with rainfall may cause ice movement on area waterways.

At minimum, small rises are expected on all rivers this week. While widespread flooding is not currently forecast, residents along rivers and low-lying areas should monitor water levels closely, especially in communities near the James and Potomac basins.

Drivers should also watch for ponding on roads during heavier downpours Sunday. Those living near rivers are encouraged to stay alert for any advisories if water levels begin rising more quickly than expected.
