Memphis, TN – A wet weekend is underway across Memphis and Shelby County, with steady rain expected to bring up to 2 inches of accumulation along and north of I-40 through Sunday night.

According to the US National Weather Service in Memphis, widespread rain showers will continue through Sunday, with the greatest totals — between 1.5 and 2 inches — expected along and north of the I-40 corridor, including parts of downtown Memphis, Bartlett, and areas stretching toward Tipton County. Areas south of I-240 and toward DeSoto County, Mississippi, are expected to see lighter totals closer to 0.5 to 1 inch.

Forecasters say confidence is high that rain will persist through much of the weekend, impacting travel along I-40, I-55, and I-240, especially during heavier downpours Saturday afternoon and again Sunday. While widespread flooding is not expected, nuisance flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas cannot be ruled out.

Drivers should be alert for ponding water on roadways, particularly on elevated ramps and typical trouble spots during steady rainfall. Visibility may also be reduced at times.

The system is not expected to bring severe weather, but umbrellas and rain gear will be necessary for outdoor plans. Rain chances taper late Sunday night into early Monday.
