Duluth, MN – An approaching winter system could bring mixed precipitation and accumulating snow to the Northland late Tuesday through Thursday, potentially affecting travel along Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 53.
According to the US National Weather Service in Duluth, above-normal temperatures will continue through the weekend and into early next week before a stronger system moves out of the Rockies and into northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
Forecast data shows Duluth reaching 44 degrees Saturday before cooling into the upper 20s by Tuesday. By Wednesday, precipitation chances increase sharply, peaking near 70% in parts of the region. Areas including Superior, Cloquet, and Hibbing show probabilities between 59% and 67% during the height of the system.
Forecasters say some mixed precipitation may develop initially Tuesday night before colder air overtakes the system, transitioning precipitation to mainly snow. Additional snow chances could linger into Thursday.
Roadways including I-35 near Duluth, US-53 between Duluth and Virginia, and US-2 across northwest Wisconsin may experience reduced visibility and slick conditions if snowfall develops as projected.
The developing system marks a shift from relatively quiet weather expected Sunday and Monday, when precipitation chances remain near zero and temperatures stay above seasonal averages.
Commuters, college students, and commercial drivers across the Twin Ports region may want to monitor updated forecasts as timing and snowfall totals become clearer.
