Fresno, CA – A powerful winter storm could bring up to four feet of snow to the Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet beginning late Sunday night, with major travel impacts possible along CA-168 and CA-41.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, there is a 70 to 90 percent probability of 48 inches or more of snow in a 72-hour period ending 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 18. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Wednesday for higher elevations of Fresno, Tulare and surrounding mountain counties.

Snow levels are expected to remain high initially before colder air settles in, leading to prolonged and heavy snowfall in the Sierra crest and foothill communities above 6,000 feet.

Travel through mountain passes could become extremely difficult or impossible at times. High-impact corridors include CA-168 east of Clovis, CA-41 toward Yosemite and CA-180 into Kings Canyon National Park. Chain controls, road closures and significant delays are possible during peak snowfall periods.

While valley locations such as Fresno, Visalia and Bakersfield are not expected to see heavy snow, travelers heading into the mountains early next week should closely monitor forecasts and prepare for winter driving conditions.

Officials urge residents and visitors to finalize travel plans before Sunday night and carry emergency supplies if venturing into higher elevations.
