Gaylord, MI – Drivers across northern Michigan could encounter freezing fog and slick roads late Friday night into Saturday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, areas of freezing fog have developed across parts of northern Lower and eastern Upper Michigan and are expected to expand overnight into Saturday, February 14. In some locations, the fog may become locally dense, reducing visibility and making nighttime and early morning travel more difficult.
Forecasters say temperatures falling below freezing after Friday’s milder conditions may lead to slick spots, especially where snowmelt refreezes. Bridges, overpasses and untreated road surfaces are particularly vulnerable to icy patches.
The Special Weather Statement covers a wide portion of the region, including Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Grand Traverse, Alpena, Charlevoix and Mackinac counties. Cities impacted include Traverse City, Petoskey, Gaylord, Alpena, Cadillac, Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac Island.
Motorists traveling late Friday night or early Saturday morning are urged to slow down and use low-beam headlights in areas of dense fog. Even if roads appear wet, surfaces may be icy where temperatures dip below 32 degrees.
While no widespread winter storm is expected, patchy freezing fog can quickly create localized hazards.
