Albuquerque, New Mexico – Wind gusts over 50 mph could impact travel along Interstate 40 and Interstate 25 beginning Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, strong winds are expected to develop Tuesday and continue through Thursday across central and eastern New Mexico. Forecast guidance shows a 20% to 80% chance of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, especially along and east of the central mountain chain.

High-profile vehicles traveling east-west routes such as I-40 may encounter hazardous crosswinds. Blowing dust is possible across the eastern plains, while blowing snow could reduce visibility in higher elevations.

Officials warn that winds of this strength may be capable of knocking down trees and utility lines, increasing the risk of localized power outages. Fire danger may also increase in eastern and portions of central New Mexico due to strong winds combined with low humidity.

Ahead of the wind event, widespread rain and mountain snow showers are forecast across central and northern New Mexico through tonight, with many areas receiving between 0.10 and 0.25 inches of precipitation. Snow levels are expected to fall from around 8,500 feet this evening to near 7,500 feet by early Saturday morning.

Temperatures will remain above normal through midweek before gradually cooling later in the week.

Truck drivers, commuters, and students traveling along I-25, I-40, and U.S. 285 should prepare for sudden gusts and reduced visibility beginning Tuesday.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor objects and monitor forecast updates as wind probabilities become more refined.
