Denver, Colorado – Snow will snarl travel along the I-70 mountain corridor this afternoon and evening, with several inches expected before daybreak Saturday.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. this afternoon through 5 a.m. MST Saturday for the high mountains above 9,000 feet, including Summit County, the Mosquito Range, Indian Peaks and parts of Grand, Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek and Park counties.
Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of accumulation, with the heaviest snow falling this evening. Roads over Berthoud Pass, the Eisenhower Tunnel, Mount Blue Sky and stretches near Breckenridge and Winter Park will likely turn slick and snow-packed.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver, the timing will directly impact the Friday evening commute from the Front Range into the high country. Drivers heading west from Denver toward Summit County should prepare for reduced visibility and icy conditions, especially after sunset.
Ski traffic and weekend travelers may encounter slowdowns along I-70 and U.S. Highway 40. Traction laws could be enacted if snowfall rates increase.
Motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra following distance and check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting cotrip.org before traveling. Carry winter emergency supplies, including blankets, water and a charged phone.
Snow will taper toward early Saturday morning, but icy spots may persist into the weekend.
