Atlanta, Georgia – Elevated fire danger is in effect across North and Central Georgia today as low humidity and dry vegetation increase wildfire risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, relative humidity values will drop to 25% or less during the afternoon and evening hours. Northeasterly winds between 5 and 10 mph, combined with dry fuels, could allow any fires that develop to spread rapidly.
A Fire Danger Statement remains in effect through 7 p.m. Friday. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning.
The dry conditions will be short-lived. Rain is forecast to return late Saturday into Sunday, with widespread precipitation expected early Sunday and continuing into early Monday morning.
Rainfall totals are projected to range from 0.5 to 2 inches area-wide. Most communities, including Atlanta, Athens, Macon, Rome and Columbus, are expected to receive between 1 and 1.5 inches. The highest rain probabilities occur Sunday afternoon and evening, with some locations approaching near-certain precipitation during peak periods.
While rainfall amounts have trended slightly lower in recent forecasts and the onset has slowed, the system should provide beneficial moisture following recent dry conditions.
Drivers along I-75, I-85, I-20, I-16 and US-78 should prepare for wet roadways Sunday. Widespread flooding is not currently anticipated.
For residents planning outdoor activities, Friday presents elevated fire risk, while Sunday brings the highest likelihood of rain.
