Dodge City, Kansas – Widespread rainfall is expected across southwest Kansas late Friday night through Saturday morning, with totals between one-quarter and one-half inch likely.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, confidence has increased that most of the region will receive measurable rain, with probabilities ranging from 70% to near 100% by Saturday morning. Forecasters say most of the precipitation will fall during the first half of Saturday.

Rainfall amounts of ¼ to ½ inch are expected to be common across communities including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Hays and Pratt. Officials note it is relatively uncommon for all precipitation in February to fall as rain rather than snow, but temperatures are forecast to remain warm enough to support liquid rainfall.

The steady rain could create wet roadways along major corridors including US-50, US-83, US-54, US-281 and I-70. While no severe weather is anticipated, drivers should prepare for reduced visibility and slick conditions during periods of moderate rainfall Saturday morning.

The rainfall may provide beneficial moisture to dry soils across portions of southwest Kansas, though additional precipitation would be needed for longer-term improvements.

For early weekend travelers and students participating in Saturday activities, the most widespread rain is expected before midday.
