Albuquerque, New Mexico – Snow will begin coating high mountain roads by late Friday morning, creating slick and hazardous travel across northern New Mexico through 5 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday for the Tusas Mountains, including Chama, and the northern and southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow above 8,500 feet, with lighter totals at lower elevations.

The heaviest snowfall will target mountain passes and high terrain, where reduced traction could slow traffic along U.S. 64 near Chama and stretches of NM 518 and NM 38 through the Sangre de Cristo range. Snow-packed pavement and limited visibility may make travel difficult, especially Friday afternoon and evening when snowfall rates peak.

Drivers heading toward ski areas or crossing higher passes should increase following distance, reduce speed, and carry winter gear in case of delays. Road crews will monitor conditions, but changing snowfall intensity could quickly impact untreated surfaces.

Conditions should gradually improve after daybreak Saturday, though lingering slick spots may persist on shaded roadways. Travelers can check updated road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out.
