Albany, New York – Snow and mixed precipitation could impact New York Feb. 18-22, with upstate areas facing the highest winter risk.

According to the National Weather Service 6-10 Day Outlook issued Thursday, Feb. 12, above-normal precipitation is favored across New York during the Feb. 18-22 period. Upstate New York, including Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, may see periods of snow or a rain and snow mix, especially if temperatures fluctuate near freezing.

Localized sleet is possible in transition zones where warmer surface air meets colder air aloft. While widespread heavy snowfall is not currently projected, minor to moderate accumulations cannot be ruled out across northern and western counties.

The Adirondacks and higher elevations could see greater snowfall totals depending on storm track and temperature trends.

Downstate areas, including New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, are more likely to experience primarily rain. Brief mixing cannot be ruled out during overnight or early morning hours north of the city.

The broader pattern supports heavier snowfall potential across Minnesota and Wisconsin, while mixed precipitation extends across Michigan, northern Ohio and northern Pennsylvania.

Temperatures are forecast to trend above normal across much of the eastern United States, increasing the likelihood of shifting precipitation types across southern New York.

For commuters and students returning after President’s Day week, fluctuating precipitation could create slick travel conditions, particularly along Interstate 90 and Interstate 87 corridors upstate.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that 6-10 day outlooks reflect probabilities rather than exact totals. Residents should monitor updated forecasts for refined timing and snowfall projections.
