Indianapolis, Indiana – Rain and a potential rain-snow mix could impact Indiana Feb. 18-22, with northern counties facing the highest winter risk.

According to the National Weather Service 6-10 Day Outlook issued Thursday, Feb. 12, above-normal precipitation is favored across Indiana during the Feb. 18-22 period. Northern Indiana, including South Bend and Fort Wayne, may see periods of snow or a rain and snow mix, particularly if temperatures hover near freezing.

Localized sleet is possible in transition zones where warmer surface air interacts with colder air aloft. While widespread heavy snowfall is not currently projected for Indiana, minor accumulations cannot be ruled out across counties near the Michigan border.

Central Indiana, including Indianapolis and Lafayette, is more likely to see primarily rain with brief mix potential during overnight hours. Southern Indiana, including Evansville and areas along the Ohio River, is expected to see mostly rain.

The broader pattern supports heavier snowfall potential across Minnesota and Wisconsin, while mixed precipitation extends across Michigan, northern Illinois and northern Ohio.

Temperatures are forecast to trend above normal across much of the eastern United States, increasing the likelihood of changing precipitation types across northern Indiana.

For commuters and students returning after President’s Day week, fluctuating precipitation types could create slick travel conditions during early morning hours, particularly north of Interstate 70.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that 6-10 day outlooks indicate probabilities rather than exact storm totals. Residents should monitor updated forecasts for refined timing and accumulation details.
