Amarillo, Texas – Strong winds and dry air early next week may elevate wildfire risk across the Texas Panhandle.

According to the US National Weather Service in Amarillo, a pattern shift is expected heading into early next week. If rainfall remains limited through the weekend, forecasters say a combination of warm temperatures, low relative humidity, and increasing winds could lead to critical fire weather conditions by Monday and Tuesday.

The agency said highs in the 70s and 80s are forecast from Sunday through Tuesday, especially Monday and Tuesday. If minimal rainfall occurs Friday night into Saturday, fuels may remain dry enough to support rapid fire growth.

Wind gusts Tuesday may reach as high as 60 miles per hour. Those winds, paired with low humidity, could contribute to large fire spread across open areas of the Panhandle.

Travelers along Interstate 40, Interstate 27, and US Highway 287 near Amarillo and surrounding communities may encounter blowing dust and reduced visibility if conditions intensify. Strong crosswinds could also impact high-profile vehicles.

Officials have not issued a formal Red Flag Warning at this time, but residents are urged to monitor updates. Outdoor burning is discouraged during periods of elevated fire risk.

Early-week commuters, agricultural workers, and those traveling long rural roadways should remain aware of rapidly changing conditions.

The weather service said forecast details may evolve depending on rainfall totals later this week. Updates are expected as confidence increases.
