Burlington, Vermont – Subzero temperatures Friday morning may create icy haze and reduced visibility across northern Vermont.

According to the US National Weather Service in Burlington, a strong temperature inversion is expected early Friday, potentially trapping ice crystals in the air. The conditions are most likely in parts of the Adirondacks and northern Vermont, where temperatures may fall below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

The agency said phenomena such as ice pillars or diamond dust are possible, particularly in areas shaded on their forecast graphic, including colder valleys and elevated terrain. These optical effects typically occur when the sun is at a low angle and temperatures are in the single digits or below zero.

The most favorable window for these conditions is between 7 and 8 a.m. Friday, when surface temperatures remain cold and sunlight begins interacting with suspended ice crystals.

While no formal advisory has been issued, the weather service encouraged residents to watch for hazy conditions and visible light pillars during the morning commute. Motorists along Interstate 89, U.S. Route 7, Vermont Route 100, and connecting roadways near the Adirondack region could notice brief visibility changes.

Early-morning commuters, students, and shift workers may experience the coldest conditions of the week during this period.

The weather service noted that these conditions are temperature-dependent and may vary by location. As the sun rises higher and temperatures gradually warm, the icy haze is expected to dissipate.
