Wichita, Kansas – Widespread rain may bring 1 inch or more of rainfall along I-35 late Friday through Saturday night.

According to the US National Weather Service in Wichita, rain is expected to develop late Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday night across central, south-central and southeast Kansas. A few embedded thunderstorms are possible, though severe storms are not currently expected.

Forecast probabilities show a moderate to high chance of at least 1 inch of rain across much of the region. Coffeyville carries the highest probability at 75%, followed by Winfield and Eureka near 67%, and Wichita around 54%. Areas farther northwest, including Russell, have lower probabilities near 17%.

Periods of steady rainfall may lead to localized minor low-land flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage. Motorists traveling along I-35 through Wichita and Emporia, K-96 near Hutchinson, US-77 in Cowley County and US-166 in southeast Kansas could encounter reduced visibility and ponding on roadways during heavier rain bands.

High temperatures Friday are expected in the lower to mid-60s before cooler air settles in Saturday, with highs in the 50s. Drier and warmer conditions are forecast to return Sunday into early next week, with highs climbing back into the upper 60s and 70s by Monday and Tuesday.

Drivers and weekend travelers should monitor updated forecasts and allow extra time for wet conditions Saturday.
