Greenville, South Carolina – Up to 3 inches of rain could impact travel along I-85 and I-26 late Saturday night through Sunday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, widespread rain is expected across the western Carolinas this weekend. Precipitation will most likely develop late Saturday night or early Sunday morning and continue through Sunday evening.

Forecast totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely across much of Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina. Higher localized totals up to 3 inches are possible near the North Carolina–South Carolina border, particularly west of I-26 and across portions of the mountains and foothills.

Forecasters say the rainfall will generally be beneficial. However, heavier pockets of rain could lead to nuisance flooding in poorly drained or low-lying areas. Isolated bankfull conditions on area streams are also possible if heavier bands persist.

Motorists traveling along I-85 between Greenville and Spartanburg, I-26 toward Asheville, and US-29 through Anderson County may encounter reduced visibility and ponding of water during periods of steadier rainfall Sunday afternoon and evening.

The unsettled pattern is associated with a low pressure system moving across the Southeast, interacting with abundant moisture across the region.

Drivers planning weekend travel, including those attending Valentine’s Day events, should monitor updated forecasts and allow extra travel time Sunday.
