Blacksburg, Virginia – A widespread rain event Sunday could bring over half an inch of rainfall along I-81 and surrounding highways.
According to the US National Weather Service in Blacksburg, most of southwest and central Virginia is expected to receive measurable rainfall this weekend, with the highest totals likely near the Virginia–North Carolina border. Rain could begin as early as Saturday evening before becoming more widespread Sunday.
Forecasters indicate a 60% to 80% chance that much of the region will receive more than 0.5 inches of rain. The best chances for higher totals are across southern Virginia, including areas near Danville and South Boston.
Rainfall amounts may vary depending on the exact track and timing of the system. However, confidence remains high that most communities across the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley and Southside Virginia will see steady rainfall at some point Sunday.
Motorists traveling along I-81 through Blacksburg and Roanoke, US-220 near Martinsville, US-29 in Danville and I-77 near Wytheville may encounter reduced visibility and wet roadways, especially during periods of steadier rain Sunday afternoon and evening.
While widespread flooding is not currently forecast, localized ponding may occur in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Drivers planning weekend travel, including those heading toward Valentine’s Day events, should monitor updated forecasts and allow additional travel time Sunday.
