Memphis, Tennessee – Up to 2 inches of rain could impact travel along I-40 Saturday night into Sunday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Memphis, above-normal temperatures will continue into next week, with highs reaching the 60s to low 70s across west Tennessee, northeast Arkansas and north Mississippi. Rain chances return this weekend as a slow-moving system moves into the Mid-South.
Forecasters indicate a 30% to 50% chance of rainfall exceeding 2 inches, primarily south of I-40 and across portions of northeast Arkansas. The heaviest period of rainfall is expected Saturday night, with widespread showers continuing into Sunday before tapering by Monday.
Probability maps show higher rainfall potential across areas including Memphis, Jonesboro, Oxford and Tupelo. While widespread flooding is not currently forecast, localized ponding of water may develop on roadways, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas.
Motorists traveling along I-40 through Memphis and Jackson, I-55 into north Mississippi, US-63 in northeast Arkansas and US-278 near Oxford may encounter reduced visibility and water-covered lanes during heavier downpours.
The National Weather Service advises residents to never walk or drive into floodwaters and to continue monitoring updated forecasts through the weekend.
Drivers, including those traveling for Valentine’s Day weekend events, should allow extra travel time Saturday night and Sunday.
