Chicago Heights, Illinois – Rain could transition to a wintry mix along the Illinois–Indiana state line Wednesday, potentially creating slick travel conditions near the Interstate 80 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service, a midweek system is forecast to bring steady rain to northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana before colder air filters into the region. As temperatures fall toward freezing, rain may mix with or briefly change to sleet or wet snow, particularly late Wednesday into the evening hours.

Communities along the state line — including Chicago Heights and Lansing in Illinois and Hammond and Munster in Indiana — could experience periods of mixed precipitation. While widespread accumulation is not currently expected, even light sleet or wet snow may reduce visibility and create slippery stretches on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses.

Forecasters say the exact timing of the transition will depend on how quickly colder air moves in behind the system. Small temperature shifts could determine whether most areas remain rain-dominant or see minor slushy accumulation.

Drivers along Interstate 80, Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 30 should remain alert for changing road conditions, especially during the late afternoon and evening commute.

Meteorologists advise monitoring updated forecasts as precipitation types and temperatures may fluctuate.

Commuters and students crossing the Illinois–Indiana state line may want to allow extra travel time Wednesday if conditions deteriorate.
