Minnesota’s North Shore is waking up under a crystal-clear sky, but the cold cuts straight through your coat. Temperatures dipped to 12°F in Duluth early this morning, with calm winds and bright winter sun rising over Lake Superior. Side streets and untreated sidewalks remain icy in spots, especially where melting and refreezing occurred. It’s classic February freeze territory.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, sunshine dominates today with highs reaching near 30°F. Light east winds keep conditions quiet. Tonight turns partly cloudy with lows dropping into the mid-20s, allowing slick patches to redevelop where snowmelt lingers.

Friday warms noticeably. Highs climb to around 40°F under sunny skies. That warming trend continues into Valentine’s Weekend, with highs near 40°F Saturday and low 40s Sunday. Snowpack will soften during the day, but remember this is peak flash-freeze season. As temperatures fall back into the 20s at night, wet pavement can quickly refreeze on bridges and overpasses along I-35 and Highway 61.

Washington’s Birthday stays mild with highs near 41°F and partly sunny skies. But attention shifts to Tuesday. A system may bring a rain and snow mix with breezy northeast winds. Highs hover in the upper 30s before colder air filters in. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, snow showers are possible with gusts approaching 30 mph. Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly if snowfall rates increase.

Long-range trends suggest temperatures staying near or slightly above normal late next week, but winter is not finished yet.
