Baltimore, Maryland – Wind gusts up to 45 mph and bursts of snow will create hazardous travel along the Allegheny Front this afternoon, with slick roads and falling branches possible before the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, patchy freezing drizzle may redevelop by midafternoon before quickly changing to snow showers west of the Allegheny Front. Snow showers could turn moderate at times this evening, producing 1 to 3 inches of accumulation above 2,500 feet, especially along west-facing slopes in Garrett County, western Allegany County, Grant and Pendleton counties.
Near and east of the Allegheny Front, including Cumberland, Keyser and Petersburg, the primary concern will be strong wind gusts reaching 45 mph through this evening. These winds could down small tree limbs and cause isolated power interruptions. High-profile vehicles along U.S. 50, U.S. 220 and Interstate 68 should prepare for sudden crosswinds.
Higher elevations near Oakland, Mountain Lake Park, Bayard and Snowshoe-area ridges may see snow-covered roads develop quickly after sunset as temperatures fall into the 20s. Bridges and untreated secondary roads will become slippery first.
Conditions gradually improve Thursday, but lingering snow showers and gusty winds may persist into the afternoon. Travelers should check 511 for the latest road conditions, as additional advisories remain possible through Thursday.
