Charleston, WV – Mountain snow showers taper tonight as a warming trend builds into the weekend across West Virginia.
According to the US National Weather Service in Charleston, upslope snow showers will continue in the mountains Tuesday night before high pressure regains control for the next few days. Conditions are expected to turn drier Wednesday through Saturday, with temperatures gradually climbing statewide.
Forecast highs Thursday are expected in the low 20s to low 30s in the mountains, with lowland communities reaching the mid-30s to low 40s. By Friday, mountain highs rise into the upper 20s to mid-30s, while lowlands warm into the upper 30s to mid-40s.
Saturday brings additional warming, with mountain highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s and lowlands reaching the mid-40s to mid-50s. Overnight lows through the period will generally range from the teens and 20s in higher elevations to the 20s and low 30s across lower elevations.
Forecasters say another disturbance may move north from the south late Saturday night into Sunday, bringing the potential for a soaking rain across much of the state. Highs Sunday are projected in the mid-30s to mid-40s in the mountains and mid-40s to low 50s in the lowlands, including areas along Interstate 64, Interstate 77, and Interstate 79 corridors.
The shift from snow showers to rain could impact weekend travel, particularly along mountain routes before temperatures moderate.
Drivers and students returning Sunday evening should monitor updated forecasts for changing road conditions.
