Lubbock, Texas – Rainfall totals up to 1 inch are expected across West Texas from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.
According to the US National Weather Service in Lubbock, widespread rain chances will increase Friday, with the heaviest precipitation forecast late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Most communities across the Caprock and Rolling Plains are expected to receive between 0.5 and 1.0 inch of rain, with isolated areas potentially exceeding 1.0 inch.
Forecast maps show rainfall totals near 1 inch in areas including Plainview, Tulia and parts of the northern South Plains, while Lubbock, Brownfield and Levelland are projected to receive between one-half and one inch. Travel corridors near Interstate 27, U.S. Highway 84, U.S. 62 and U.S. 385 may experience wet pavement and localized ponding.
The weather service notes that flash flooding risk remains low. However, nuisance flooding and water ponding are possible in low-lying roads and poor drainage areas, particularly during heavier downpours overnight Friday.
Rain chances will begin increasing Friday afternoon before becoming more widespread late in the evening. Precipitation is expected to taper off sometime Saturday evening.
Drivers traveling along I-27 and connecting highways late Friday should prepare for reduced visibility and slick road conditions.
Students, early-morning commuters and delivery drivers Saturday may encounter standing water on area roadways.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as rainfall totals may vary by location.
