Buffalo, New York – Snow returns today with accumulations up to 6 inches east of Lake Ontario, prompting travel concerns along I-81 and I-90 corridors.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, after a brief period of patchy freezing drizzle this morning, steadier snow will overspread the region. Accumulating snowfall is expected to become focused east of Lake Ontario and across higher elevations east of Lake Erie.
Forecast snowfall totals include 4 to 6 inches near Newark, 3 to 4 inches in Rochester and Watertown, and 1 to 2 inches in Buffalo and Jamestown. Areas such as Fulton and Lowville could also see 3 to 4 inches before the system tapers.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for portions of the region.
Drivers along Interstate 81 from Watertown south toward Syracuse, Interstate 90 through Rochester and Batavia, Interstate 86 near Jamestown, and Route 31 near Newark should prepare for snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, especially during afternoon and evening hours.
Temperatures are expected to stay nearly steady through the day, generally hovering in the upper 20s to near 31 degrees. The steady temperatures may allow snow to accumulate efficiently on untreated surfaces.
Commuters, school districts, and delivery drivers traveling east of the lakes should anticipate slower travel times and possible slick conditions through tonight.
