Columbia, South Carolina – A passing front will bring morning showers and wind gusts near 30 mph along I-20 and I-26 before conditions gradually improve this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, rain chances increased early Wednesday as the front approached the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area. Probability forecasts show rain chances between 60 and 75 percent during the morning hours in Columbia, Augusta, Sumter, and Orangeburg.

Winds are expected to strengthen after sunrise, with gusts around 30 mph possible across much of central South Carolina and east-central Georgia. Gusty conditions may impact drivers along Interstate 20 from Columbia to Aiken and Augusta, Interstate 26 toward Orangeburg, and U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 378.

Rain chances are forecast to decrease through the afternoon as the front moves east of the region. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 60s to low 70s before cooler air filters in later in the day.

The combination of wet roads and gusty winds may lead to brief travel slowdowns during the morning commute, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.

No severe weather is currently expected, but isolated heavier showers could briefly reduce visibility.

Students heading to school and morning commuters should allow extra travel time before drier conditions return later today.
