Birmingham, Alabama – Rain and thunderstorm chances will increase this weekend, with up to 3 inches of rainfall possible along the I-65 corridor by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, light to moderate rain will continue across central Alabama through midday Wednesday before drier conditions briefly return. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to redevelop late Friday and become more widespread Saturday and Sunday.

Forecast rainfall totals for the week range from 1 to 3 inches, with the highest amounts expected across southwestern portions of central Alabama, including areas near Demopolis and Selma.

Rain probabilities climb significantly this weekend. Birmingham shows rain chances increasing from 70 percent Saturday to 85 percent Sunday. Montgomery and Tuscaloosa could see probabilities near 80 to 90 percent Sunday, while Gadsden and Anniston remain in the 60 to 80 percent range.

Drivers along Interstate 65 from Birmingham to Montgomery, Interstate 20 from Tuscaloosa to Anniston, and Interstate 59 toward Gadsden should prepare for periods of heavy rain, reduced visibility, and ponding on roadways during peak rainfall.

While severe weather is not explicitly forecast at this time, thunderstorms may produce brief downpours and gusty winds.

Temperatures will remain mild, with highs generally in the 60s before cooler air filters in early next week.

Commuters, weekend travelers, and residents in flood-prone areas should monitor forecast updates as rainfall totals are refined.
